Matching sunshine quote tattoos on shoulders

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are photographed from behind, showing a black script tattoo on each upper shoulder. The left reads 'You Are My Sunshine' and the right reads 'My Only Sunshine', both in thin, even linework with a small sun outline and rays beside the words. The tattoos are in black ink on a plain skin tone, set against a grey tarmac background with a painted parking marking.

Dear Nell,

The lock at Hollins Bridge has jammed again, so we are tied up below it with nothing to do but wait for the water to settle and for Dad to stop swearing at the gate. The river is the colour of strong tea this morning. Pip has been sitting on the coal bunker since six, staring at the towpath as if you might come walking along it with a bag of Bakewell slices.

I have been thinking about the night before you left. You sat on the back step with your knees up, refusing to cry, and Mam started singing the old one, the line about you being her only sunshine, the way she always did when one of us was being stubborn. You told her you were too old for that. She sang it anyway, and you pretended not to join in, and that was the nearest any of us came to saying goodbye.

Dad has finally repainted the sun on the roof. He did it on Sunday in the rain, under a tarpaulin, and it came out lopsided, with the rays going every which way like a child's drawing. He says it looks better that way. I think he is right. It looks like something made by hands that missed someone.

The gate is open now. I can hear Dad shouting for the rope. I will post this from Leeds Road when we pass through, so the stamp will be fresh, and I will ask the postmistress to tell you the boat is still here.

Love, Jo
