Matching swirl symbol tattoos on both feet

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet, one on each side of the frame, show a similar black looping symbol with curled terminals on the upper foot. The linework is bold and solid with smooth curves, and the ink is shown as a single dark tone against pale skin. The photograph is black and white, with the feet centred on a textured surface and painted black toenails visible.

Dear Tom,

Dad's knee has gone again, so I have had the tiller since Stourport. The Mary Ann is still sound, though the water has been low and we grounded twice above Bewdley. You would laugh at me, sat on the cabin roof with the pole across my knees, swearing at a heron that would not get out of the way.

The swirl you painted on the rudder board the summer before you left has come up through the new black, so the lock-keeper at Worcester told me off for not scraping it back. I said it was the mark of the boat and not mine to scrape. He said the river had its own marks and the Severn did not need a barge telling it otherwise. I still went and looked at the eddy below the weir, where the water loops round on itself and comes out the other side, and I thought of the curl you put on the end of every letter you ever wrote me.

Mum found your old chart in the bread tin. The spiral you drew on the bend below Holt is where you reckoned the sandbank would shift, and it did, by a good fathom, the week after you went. I have marked the new depth in pencil beside yours so you can see I am not as hopeless at reading water as you say.

Come home at Christmas if the sea lets you. The boat will be tied up at Gloucester and the kettle will be on. Nell.
