Matching infinity and heart wrist tattoos
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two hands rest together, each showing the same infinity symbol tattoo on the inner wrist. The symbol is outlined in black with solid black fill, and a small purple heart sits inside the right loop of each. The background is dark and the lighting is even, so the linework and the purple accent are clearly visible.

The ferry at Tallow Reach ran on a rope strung between two landings. The rope was never cut, only spliced, so the crossing had no end. Two women worked it by lamplight, Maud on the north bank and Ida on the south, and in forty years neither had set foot on the other's side.

Each night they rowed their boats out to the middle, where the rope sagged under the weight of the river. There they met in the dark with their lanterns held low and swapped the wicks they had trimmed on their own side. Nobody on the bridge above ever saw them speak. Maud kept a violet bead of glass in her apron pocket, found in the silt years before, and after the swap she slid it onto the iron ring where the rope bent, so the next one to pass would know someone had been there.
The winter the flood came, the rope sang and then went slack. Maud rowed out with no light, because her lantern had cracked on the stone steps. She felt along the wet cord until she found the ring, and the bead, and beside it a second bead, still warm from a hand. Ida had got there first, sitting in the black with her own lamp dead too. They sat in the two boats with their knees touching and said nothing, until the water began to lift the rope and they had to haul.
At first light they spliced the broken strand together in a loop that crosses itself once and turns back on itself, and the violet bead stayed threaded where it had always been. Nobody crosses the river that way now, but the knot is still there, and the lamps still find it in the dark.
