Matching thigh tattoos with leaves and a flower

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two thighs are photographed side by side, each with a black tattoo wrapped around the leg above the knee. The tattoos combine bold serif-style lettering with a vine of leaves and a five-petal flower at the centre. The ink is solid black with clean, even linework and no colour, and the close framing keeps the two designs level and equal in size.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had the half that said OH NO LOVE, and she knew what it meant before the flood reached the mill at Sallow Ford. Her sister Wren had the other half, the one that said YOU'RE NOT ALONE, because Wren could read and Ada could only count sheep. Their grandmother had cut the garland from one long length of blackthorn vine and tied a five-petalled flower at the middle, so that each girl would always have a piece of the other close by.

The river took the footbridge that night and the bell from St Ebba's with it. In the morning Ada walked the bank with her half of the vine bound round her thigh under her skirt, a dark band of leaves against the cold. She met a drover who had lost two cows and a son, and she asked him whether he had seen a girl in a red shawl. He said the water had gone down past the willows, and there was nobody living out there, only a heron standing on one leg in the shallows.

Ada walked the whole length of the Sallow for six days, reading the words on her leg aloud at every ford and every broken fence, because her grandmother had said a sentence spoken to the river was heard by whoever was listening. On the seventh morning she found Wren caught in the roots of an alder, her half of the vine still tight around her leg and the flower torn but whole.

Ada knelt in the mud and laid her own half beside it. The two halves met end to end, and the sentence was finished, and the heron lifted off the water without a sound.
