Matching three-dot tattoos on two backs

Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two people are photographed from behind, side by side, each with three solid black dots in a horizontal row on the side of the upper back. The dots are small, evenly spaced and crisply edged, with no shading. The skin around the tattoo on the right is slightly pink, and the composition is close, with the dots placed near the centre of each frame.

The key on the Porthgwidden station sat in a wooden box that had been painted green before the war, and by the time Mags Tremayne came up the cliff path with the wind pulling at her skirts, it was already chattering. Three short, then nothing. Three short again. Her sister Nell had always been impatient with the code, but in twelve years she had never once sent a message she didn't mean.

Mags wrote the letters down on the back of a tide table before she sat. Three dots meant S, and S meant still here. They had agreed on it the winter their mother went into the infirmary in Penzance, when neither of them could afford to say anything kinder in a telegram that cost sixpence a word. Still here. Still here. Nell had sent it from the boat shed at the harbour, which meant the tide had turned and she was waiting on the lifeboat to come in.

Mags kept the key going until the light failed, sending back the same three dots over and over until her fingers ached against the brass. Somewhere below, a lamp swung along the Newlyn road. A boy came up the path with a satchel and stopped at the gate, reading her face the way he read weather.

She didn't look up. She tapped out the reply with her palm flat on the bench, and the last thing she sent before the line went quiet was the same thing again, just to be sure it had reached the other side of the water.
