Three pairs of feet are crossed together, each ankle with a small, single infinity symbol in black ink. The linework is thin and even, with no visible shading, and the symbols are placed on the outer ankle bone. The warm, soft-focus photograph shows a brown carpet background, and the ink is the only colour in the image.

Dear Ruth, the big top at Harrowgate came down on Sunday night and I have been sitting on the bench by the cattle truck ever since, counting the lamps as they go out. Father sold the elephant to a man from Pilsen who didn't even look at her teeth. The clowns have gone to a care home in Scarborough to do bingo calls, which Mags says is the saddest thing she has ever heard, and then she laughed until she coughed.

The figure eight is still painted on the side of the wagon, the one you did with a borrowed brush in 98 when the white ran out and you finished it with the ringmaster's tea. Do you remember? You said a loop with no end was the only honest thing a circus could be. I thought you were showing off. The wire is still strung between the two poles at the back field, and nobody has had the heart to take it down. Every evening I walk the length of it in my socks, arms out, the way you taught me, and I come back to the wagon with the same wobble in my knees you always said was my soul trying to leave.
Father says we will winter in the old depot at Wakefield and see what comes in spring. I think he means we will see what doesn't. I have decided I am staying here until the wire comes down. Come back if you can, or at least send a postcard with a train on it. Tell me you still keep the little loops we inked on ourselves in the caravan with Mags's pen. I have mine, and when I can't sleep I think of yours, and it seems absurd that a few lines of ink should be the only thing left on this field that will go on.
