Two matching girl doodles on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are pressed side by side, each carrying a small tattoo of a simple stick-style girl with pigtails and a dress. A thin connecting line joins the two figures' hands across the gap between the wrists. The linework is clean and uniform in black ink with light grey shading, set against neutral skin and a plain background.

Mira had the salvage chart half unrolled across the galley table when the ration bell rang twice, which meant the forward ring had lost pressure again. Neither of us looked up. The chart showed the old habitat Halden Reach, drifting dead past the ice belt, and in its margin someone had inked two small figures with pigtails, standing hand in hand across a thin pencil line that ran off the edge of the paper.

"Pell sisters," Mira said, tapping one with a grease-black thumb. "Everybody on the crew says they drew on the observation glass the year the reactor went cold. Kept at it with a stub of wax for a decade."

I found the glass panel later that shift, bolted to a bulkhead in the spine, the wax lines gone milky with age. The girls were still there, one with ribbons, one with a bow askew, and the line between their hands ran straight out to the window edge, as if it had been a rope. Pressure drills, Mira reckoned. Nobody clipped on alone in the Reach, so the sisters had tied themselves together and stayed together.

When the bell finally stopped I sat on the deck beside the glass and traced that line with my glove. Forty years of bad air had made it look like rope, but it had never been one. It was a promise drawn small enough to carry, and I clipped my own tether to the bulkhead ring beside it before I went back to work.
