Matching blue and yellow characters on forearms

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two matching tattoos of small round-headed cartoon characters sit on a pair of forearms, one filled in blue and the other in yellow. Both figures have bold black outlines, simple white eyes and cheeks, and a red heart on their body. The shading is soft and the colour is applied flatly, and the two designs are placed side by side in a close, balanced composition.

The rope had frayed all winter, and Bo had said so every morning, but Nell only laughed and hung her kettle on the mooring ring. On the Tuesday it gave. The Juniper drifted off down the cut with the kettle still ticking on the stove, and the pair of them stood on the towpath watching the narrowboat shrink towards the bridge.

Bo was blue because he had been painted blue, and Nell was yellow because she had been painted yellow, and neither of them had thought that a problem until the lock-keeper at Hatton asked which of them was the captain. Nell said she was. Bo said the captain had a heart on his jumper, and so did he. They checked. They both did, two small red hearts stitched in the same place, so the lock-keeper decided they were obviously a crew and gave them a lift in his van as far as the next lock.

They caught up with the Juniper at the top of the flight, where it had fetched up against a willow with the kettle finally gone quiet. Nell climbed aboard first, her round yellow head bobbing over the rail, and Bo followed and stood beside her on the deck, close enough that their elbows touched. The kettle was cold. Neither of them minded.

Later, Nell boiled it again on the little stove and poured two mugs, and Bo laid his hand flat over her red heart and then over his own, to check they were still beating in time. They were. The boat rocked gently against the willow, the water settled, and nobody had to say anything about the rope.
