Matching cartoon character ankle tattoos

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two ankles are shown side by side, each with a small black outline tattoo of a round cartoon character. The left figure has pigtails tied with bows, freckles and raised arms, and the right figure is a smiling round character with arms out and a simple face. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the plain white skin sits against a red background and dark jeans.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had been drawn with pigtails before she had been drawn with feet, which she felt was the wrong way round. The notebook belonged to a boy called Ossie, who used the back pages for doodles during maths, and he had put her on the left of the page with two bows the size of biscuits and freckles scattered like crumbs. Across the gutter, Barnaby Plum sat on nothing at all, arms flung wide, grinning so hard his face had run out of room for eyes.

For three weeks they were neighbours on paper. Each morning Ossie turned the pages and each morning Dilys found herself a little further from the grin. She tried reaching for him with her hands, which were rather large for her. Barnaby never noticed. He was perfectly content being round, and that was exactly the thing that irritated her most.

Then the pen ran dry on a wet Thursday, and Ossie, stuck for something to draw, tore the page out and folded it into a paper aeroplane. It sailed off the desk, skimmed the radiator and landed face up in the bin beside the tea urn. Dilys could see the ceiling tiles, the flickering tube light and a sky of nothing. Barnaby kept smiling up at the tiles as though they had said something clever.

Ossie found the page on Friday, smoothed it flat and went over the crease with a fresh line of ink, so that a thin wobbling bridge now joined them where the paper had buckled. Dilys decided she would forgive him for the bin. Barnaby decided it was the best day of his life and told her so, and she let him, because at last he was standing exactly where she could reach him.
