Two matching forearm tattoos with black bird silhouettes, script quotes and teal and pink watercolour splashes.

Matching watercolour quote forearm tattoos

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms sit side by side, each carrying a tattoo with black bird silhouettes, a script phrase and soft splashes of teal, blue and pink. The left arm reads "Choose to keep going" and the right reads "this too shall pass" beside a black semicolon, with the lettering in fine black script. The colour splashes are loosely applied and bleed outwards, contrasting with the solid black birds and text.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming sideways off the river all morning, and Dilys Crane was still wiping the same tin of paints when the boy came back for the third time. He wanted the cracked pan of cerulean with the chipped rim, and he wanted it for nothing. She told him so. He stood under her awning with water running off his hood and explained that his nan had painted birds on every tea towel in the house, and he meant to paint one on the bus shelter before the council knocked it down.

She should have sent him off. Instead she found the tin, a brush with three good hairs left, and a sheet of thick paper gone soft at the corners. Rain drummed on the canvas above them. Behind the fishmonger a crate went over, and somebody swore in Polish, cheerfully.

He painted the wash first, teal bleeding into pink where the paper was still wet, and she watched him learn what she had learned at nineteen: you don't fight the bloom, you tilt the board and let it run. When he finished he pressed a clean sheet over it to take a print. When he lifted it the splashes had spread past the edges, and the black birds he added after looked as if they had just taken off from the paint.

She took a small black semicolon from the drawer under the till, cut from card years ago for a sign that never got made, and set it at the bottom corner of the print. "A full stop says you're finished," she said. "This says you might carry on." He folded the print into his coat without a word, and the rain kept falling as he ducked out past the stalls, the paint still drying on his fingers.
