Matching yin yang wrist tattoos
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two close-up photographs of wrists placed side by side show a matching pair of yin yang tattoos, one half on each wrist. The left wrist carries a solid, filled dark grey half with a small dot, while the right shows the same shape in thin black outline with a dot. The left arm wears stacked bangles and the right wears a fine gold chain bracelet with a small charm against a plain, softly lit background.

Draw your stools in, the pass is shut behind the carrier and nobody leaves Harrow Gill before the thaw, so you may as well hear about the two stones. Sit by the fire where the draught can't get at you.

Long ago there was a river stone, grey as dishwater on one face and bright as a gull's belly on the other, and a frost split it clean in two one January as it rolled through the valley. The miller's girls found the halves on the weir. Ada carried the dark half up the hill to her man's farm, and Bet took the pale half down to the ferry, and neither of them had the sense to say goodbye properly, for they were sisters and thought there would always be another Sunday.
Years went by. Ada's half cracked the bread board and was later used to prop the byre door. Bet's half sat on the ferry-house sill, and every morning she dipped it in the cold water of the Gill and dried it on her apron, the way you'd wash a child's face. Once a winter the snow closed the pass, just as it has tonight, and each of them would look up from her work and know the other was looking up too.
When Ada took the fever, Bet walked the pass in a blizzard with the dark stone in her coat, and found the byre door still propped on the broken board. She pressed the two halves together on the sill. They made no sound at all, but the small dot in each one seemed to find the other, and the snow stopped falling. That is the whole of it. Mind the fire, and mind the lamp on the stair.
