Two paired yin yang tattoos are shown on the inner wrists, each a teardrop shape filled with scrolls, dots and a stylised leaf. Both are black and grey and sit side by side on a plain background.

Ruth Ambler turned the silver blank over twice before she decided it was worth keeping. The casting had come out of the crucible lopsided, a bead that would not lie flat on the bench, and her father had always said a bad pour was only a good one still waiting for its purpose. She filed one edge into a slow curve, then the other, until the disc had become a drop about to fall from a leaf.

The groom came in on the Thursday with a pencil sketch on the back of a lock-keeper's receipt. He wanted scrolls, a stylised leaf and two dots, and he wanted them cut into both halves so that when the pieces met they would read as one thing. Ruth worked through the nights with the graver, cutting the leaf deep so it would hold a shadow, and punching the dots with a steady hand. She gave the first half a grey matt from a wire brush and left the second bright, because the bride had asked for the one that would catch the light.

On the wedding day, a cold morning on the towpath at Stoke Bruerne, the two halves were laid together on a tablecloth beside the cake. Tom's grandmother squinted at them, then picked up the dark piece and turned it a quarter round. The leaf slid into the scroll of the other and the dots lined up like a pair of eyes. Nobody else at the table had noticed the bend in the line. Ruth kept the spare blank that night, filed a little flatter than the rest, and put it in the drawer with her father's old tools, in case somebody came asking for the other half of something.
