Matching yin yang wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together, each showing a small yin yang symbol. The left tattoo is an unfilled black outline with a single dot, while the right is solid black with a white dot, so the pair fits together. The ink is crisp and simple, with a plain light background and a denim sleeve visible at the top right.

Mind the windfalls, the lot of you, and sit where the wasps can't get at your cake. Right. You want the one about the Pennick tree? It stood at the bottom of the far field, where the wall had fallen down, and it bore one apple every autumn, no more, and that apple was the sweetest thing in the county. So the two cousins who worked that orchard, Hal Pennick and his cousin Maud, went to war over it.

They fought all one August. Hal climbed the tree at dawn and Maud was up it by noon, and each swore the apple was theirs by right of the ladder. Their grandmother, who had little patience and less tobacco, took a bread knife to it on the wall one evening and split it clean through. The halves came apart pale and dark. The pale one had its pip black as a full stop, and the dark one had its pip white as a moon. She pressed the two halves together on the stone, and they fitted like a pair of clasped hands, and neither cousin could think of a single word to say.
So they sat on that wall with the juice running down their wrists, and they ate it in turns, half and half, until the sun slid behind the hop kilns. Then Hal said he'd give up the ladder if Maud would give up the shade, and Maud said the tree was big enough for the pair of them, and the old woman laughed so hard she dropped her pipe in the nettles.
Next spring they grafted a twig from each side of that tree onto a stock by the gate, one dark wood and one pale, and the two shoots grew round each other until you couldn't tell whose was whose. Go on, eat your cake. It's getting late, and the wasps are getting bold.
