Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together so that the inner wrists face the camera, and each wrist carries a small yin yang tattoo in black ink. The left design is drawn as an outline with a light, thin line, while the right is filled solid black, so the two designs mirror each other. The background is a pale tiled floor with a dark shoe at the lower left, and a denim sleeve is visible on the right wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mary Pellow had walked the Holm causeway at low water for thirty years, and she knew the sea would take a man faster than a dog could bark for him. So when her brother Tom came back from the mainland with a pot of ink and a steady hand, she made him sit on the harbour wall and draw.

"Draw the island," she said. "Just the shape of it, the way the tide leaves it."

He traced the curve of the causeway in a pale line, thin as a gull's feather, because the sea would wash it away twice a day and that suited them both. When the water came back over the stones, the outline dissolved and nobody could say where the land had been.

The second half was his idea. He wanted the dark side, the part that stays dry for an hour after everything else has gone under, and he filled it in solid, stroke by stroke, until the ink sat on the paper like a stone in a pocket. Mary laid her wrist against his and they compared them in the grey light. One was a rumour of land. The other was land that refused to leave.

Years later, when the causeway was closed to foot traffic and the pale line had blurred on both their skins, the fishermen still said the Pellow children could read the tide from their arms. Mary never corrected them. She just held her hand out flat, palm up, and let them see which half was open.
