Matching zombie tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two zombie figures are tattooed on the inner forearms of two people, one reaching out and holding a bloody object while the other points forward. Each figure is drawn with bold outlines and grey shading, with small red hearts above and red drips adding colour. The two designs mirror each other across the frame against a plain marbled background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mabel Hopley had been dead nine days when Ted Ruddock first noticed her shuffling along the allotment path, one shoe missing and her hair full of marrow-coloured mud. He was dead too, which made things awkward at the Women's Institute, but neither of them had ever been one for small talk.

They courted the way the dead do, slowly and with a great deal of standing still. Ted learned that Mabel would only come out after the church bells, and that she liked her gifts fresh. He brought her a pheasant, a cricket ball, and once, out of desperation, a rather good pork pie. She accepted the pie. The heart he gave her at the end of August had come from the butcher's bin behind the Red Lion, and she held it up to the moonlight the way other girls held a ring, turning it over, pleased, while the drips ran down her wrist.

Then the village found out. The vicar came with a candle, the constable came with a shovel, and Mabel's sister came with a handbag and a great deal of opinion. Ted stood in the middle of the green with his arm stretched out, offering the heart, while Mabel stood behind him pointing at the lych gate, which was the only way out and which she had been trying to reach for a week.

They walked through it together that night, one slow step at a time, and nobody in Dunmere has seen either of them since. The lych gate still creaks on windy nights. Sometimes, if you stand by the bench, you can hear someone laughing.
