Maneki-neko and lotus on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A white maneki-neko beckoning cat with red ears, a green collar and a gold bell sits at the centre, holding gold coins marked with black kanji. Pink cherry blossoms surround the cat and a pink lotus forms the base of the design. The bold outlines and flat areas of red, green, gold and pink are set against plain pale skin on a blue-grey background.

The cat came ashore in the bottom of a crate of tea, wrapped in a fisherman's oilskin, and nobody on Gull Stack could say who had packed it. I found it on the lamp room steps the morning after the Hesper went onto the Teeth, one paw raised as if it had something to say to the weather.

My father would have pitched it into the sea. He kept the light for thirty-one years on a diet of paraffin and superstition, and he had a rule about anything that smiled without reason. I kept it on the sill above the clockwork, where the lens threw its beam across the water every eleven seconds. The gold coins on its lap caught the sun first thing, and by noon the bell at its neck had worked loose and rang whenever the wind came round to the north.
Ruth Penhallow walked out from Porthkerris in March with a basket of lemon curd and a question about her husband's boat. The Hesper's crew had been Japanese, four of them, and the crate had their names stencilled down one side. She asked whether I'd seen the boat come in. I hadn't. I told her about the cat on the steps, and she laughed for the first time in a year, then lifted the figure from the sill and held it up to the window.
She left it with me. Ships came round the Teeth that spring, every one of them, and I told myself the cat was the reason. Some nights I still hear the bell through the glass, and I leave the lamp burning a little longer than the book says, in case somebody out there is counting the flashes and looking for the way in.
