The relief boat was late again, so I spent the afternoon on the gallery with a rag and a tin of brass polish, watching the grey cloud settle over the Farne side of the sky. Mr Pollard had left the log open on the kitchen table with a note in his square capitals: CHECK THE FOG HORN TWICE. He never trusted the horn, and he never trusted anyone who called the sea calm before dinner.

My daughter Ellen sent a letter in March, folded inside a page torn from a cereal packet. She had the words from her grandfather, who said them to every fishing boat that passed the breakwater, as easily as a man saying goodnight. I had laughed at him for years. Now I read her round pencil on the back of a tide table and it did not sound like a joke at all.

The fog came in at four, thick as wet wool, and by six the horn was coughing like an old dog. I climbed the iron stairs with a torch in my teeth, lit the lamp by hand and stood in the glass with paraffin fumes stinging my eyes. Somewhere out past the rocks a man was calling for his brother. I leaned over the rail and said the words into the murk, not loudly, the way you would say them across a kitchen table. A voice came back, then another engine, then the slow white shape of the relief boat nosing toward the landing.

I chalked the words on the slate beside the stairs in letters big enough to read from the water, then went down to put the kettle on, and nobody asked me why.
