McDonald's receipt tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm tattoo styled as a printed McDonald's receipt, with the arches logo at the top followed by the restaurant details and a list of items with prices. The lettering and numbers are rendered in crisp black linework with grey shading that gives the paper a faded, printed look. The receipt fills the centre of the frame against a grey concrete background.

The last order of the night came in at twenty to eleven, when the snow had already sealed the car park into one grey sheet. Sigrid had her mop propped against the fryer and was counting the cash drawer for the third time, because the number never came out right on a Tuesday. The boy at the window was perhaps fourteen, wearing his father's jacket with the sleeves rolled twice. He asked for a cola, a cheeseburger and a flurry, and then, in a voice pitched low enough that he thought she wouldn't hear, three extra toppings on the flurry so it would be the best one in the whole country.

He laid his coins out on the steel counter in careful rows: a heap of tens, a krone that rolled off the edge and under the freezer. The total came to 143 kroner. He had 137. Sigrid looked at the empty queue, then at the printer chattering out the receipt, a long strip of thermal paper curling over the lip of the counter like a tongue. She could have asked him to give back the choc topping. Instead she pressed the total down to what he had, a small theft from a company that would never notice, and slid the flurry across to him.

He thanked her, folded the receipt into a square and pocketed it. Then he came back, pressed his palm flat on the counter and asked whether the machine could do a free cone for a birthday. She told him it could not. He nodded as though she had confirmed something important, and went out into the snow holding the flurry in both hands like a lantern.

The next morning Sigrid found a crumpled slip wedged under the napkin dispenser, the ink smudged by a spill of cola. Paid: 137 kroner. At the bottom, in the printer's small capitals, it still said VELKOMMEN TILBAKE. She smoothed it flat, pinned it above the till, and left the lights on a little longer that week.
