Tuesday, half ebb, wind south-west, four knots. The lance came up first, which Dunmore said was the wrong way round, since a thing that long ought to come out of the water last. We had the sling round the shoulder plates by seven, and the crane man on Pier Nine swore the horn was the only part of the machine still pointing where it had been pointing when it went in. Nobody on the quay had ever seen a lance that straight in salt water.

The head surfaced at a quarter past nine with weed hanging from the brow ridge. Mrs Okafor from the chandlery brought tea down in a flask and asked what it had been built for. I told her the truth: the paperwork from the Halsey yard said only "surveillance, coastal", and the bolts on the jaw plate had been tightened by someone who expected to come back for them. Dunmore touched the crack along the throat, where the paint had split in a dark stripe, and said the thing had been fighting something, not standing guard.

We tagged it at noon and chained it to the sea wall for the inspectors. By evening the gulls had found the top of the horn and were perching there in a row, each one facing the same way as the lance, out past the breakwater. I wrote that down because it seemed worth recording, and because I still do not know what they were watching for.
