Steam locomotive and banner on a calf

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A black and grey steam locomotive with billowing smoke sits at the centre of the design, shaded with fine stippling and soft gradients. A red banner curls above and below it with the words RAILWAY TO DESTINY, and two orange flowers with green leaves sit at the top and bottom corners. Bold black outlines and red and orange accents give the piece a traditional look, shown on a lower leg against a blue fabric background.

The coal dust has settled into the creases of your knuckles again, and the depot clerk at Sand Wash says he can tell your mood from the way you slam the firebox door. Pete Hollis is already leaning on the water tank with his cap pushed back, grinning at the clock. Eleven minutes behind, he says. You tell him the engine is an old lady and old ladies are entitled to take their time on a grade.

The banner painted along her boiler says the company is running her to a railway to destiny, which the directors thought sounded fine on a timetable card. You shovel until your shoulders burn and the gauge needle creeps toward the red. Smoke rolls back over the carriages in soft grey curls, thick enough that the passengers vanish into it, and the wheels find a rhythm on the trestle that you could hum in your sleep. Somewhere past the alkali flats the whistle catches on a bad valve and sings a half-note you have never managed to fix.

At the last water stop a man climbs aboard with a carpetbag and a ticket punched for the end of the line. He asks what is out there. You tell him the end of the rails, and that nobody has ever come back to say what lies past the buffers. He pays you in silver, you tuck the coin into your waistcoat, and he nods as if you have answered something he already knew.

When the track finally runs out in a bed of red stones and sage, the sun is low and the hills glow like banked embers. You climb down, stiff and black to the elbows, and look for the stranger. He is already walking into the scrub with the carpetbag over one shoulder, and his shadow goes on ahead of him long after the engine has stopped ticking.
