Rose bouquet line drawing with pink shading
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
The drawing shows a cluster of three open roses, two half-open buds and several leaves arranged in a loose bouquet. Fine black outlines define the petals, veins and stems, with light pink wash added to the petals for soft shading. The design sits centred on pale tracing paper, with a blue and white patterned mug and a tea bag tag at the upper left.

Ada had been at the tracing paper since the bells of St Botolph's struck nine, and the tea at her elbow had gone the colour of the ink. Mr Pargeter wanted three full roses for the autumn catalogue, two buds, and leaves enough to make the whole thing look gathered that morning rather than drawn by lamplight in a back room over the seed shop.

She had the first rose right by eleven. The outer petals curled back the way the Gloire did in the nursery beds, and she laid a faint rose wash over them with the tip of a sable brush, barely more than a breath of colour. Pargeter came up the stairs with his hat still on and held the sheet to the window. He said the pink was too shy. He said the buyers in Ipswich liked their roses to look as if they had been out in the rain.
Ada did not argue. She waited until he had gone down again, then took a fresh sheet and drew one bud more than he had asked for, a tight green knot on a stem no thicker than a bootlace, and she gave it no shading at all. Let the buyers guess at it.
When the post boy came for the drawings that evening, the catalogue sheet was already rolled in brown paper. The spare one stayed flat on her table, pinned at each corner, the unshaded bud at its heart, and she left it there to dry in the lamplight.
