Metallic chevron bands and star tattoos on wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three metallic bands of chevron and geometric patterns wrap around a forearm, in gold and silver foil. A small cluster of silver star outlines sits on the back of the wrist and hand, with a soft brick wall in the background. The metallic ink is applied as a flat, solid finish with clean edges, and the composition is close and evenly lit.

Dear Nell,

Mr Pryce came through on the Thursday bus with a suitcase full of paper sheets and a voice like a tombola. He swore they were the very latest from Birmingham, gold and silver foil you pressed on with a damp flannel and peeled away after a minute, and that any girl wearing them to the Saturday dance would be the talk of Market Lacey. Mother bought two sheets for a shilling to shut him up. I chose the chevrons, three bands of arrowheads marching up the arm, half gold and half silver, because they looked like something a sailor's daughter ought to own.
I did the left arm first, then sat with my wrist on the kitchen table while the flannel dried. The foil lifted off the paper so cleanly it looked stamped. Dad came in from the allotment, saw the glitter and called me a magpie. Then he went quiet and held my arm up to the window the way he holds a seed packet he is not sure about. The little stars I put on the back of my hand came out thin as frost, five points each, scattered over the knuckles like someone had flicked a brush.
They'll be gone by Sunday, Dad said, but he took the spare sheet up to bed with him. This morning I found a silver star pressed on the back of his hand, a bit crooked, right over the knuckle where the rope burns used to be. He says it's for the Legion dance. I think it's for me. Write back soon and tell me whether Ruth's cat has had her kittens yet.
Your loving sister, Peg
