You have counted the hairpins twice already, and the lorry driver at the summit café says the road to Caranza loops eleven times before it drops into the valley, so you believe him only as far as the third bend. The snow has not come yet, but the wind carries its smell down off the Pass of Ilvera, sharp as wet slate. Your brother's postcard is folded in your coat, its corners gone soft from being unfolded in the dark.

The old path was never meant for cars. Mules carried salt up it, and a postman called Tomas Érol carried letters the other way, walking the same loop every week: over the saddle, down past the chapel, then back up the ridge where the track crosses itself at the flat stone. He told your grandmother that the crossing was the only place the mountain kept its promises, and that a letter could go round the whole circuit forever if the two people at either end never stopped thinking of each other.

You reach the last bend at dusk. A woman with a paraffin lamp is standing at the crossing stone, and she does not ask who you are. She holds out a palm, and on it lies a loop of copper wire with a green stone set into it, a second stone, orange and round, sitting beside the first. You know the ring. Your brother wore one like it the day he left, and you have not seen it since.

She says Tomas taught her the rule: walk the loop until you meet the one coming the other way, then both of you turn for home. You take the ring and slide it onto your smallest finger, where it is almost too loose. Below the crossing the valley lights are coming on one by one, and for the first time since the summit you know exactly which road you are on.
