Metallic gold and silver wrist bands and feathers
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two crossed forearms show a layered set of metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos. The designs include thin bands, a small leaf, a feather, and scattered dots that look like bracelets or cuffs. The fine line work and shimmering foil sit against warm skin tones on a light tiled floor.

The bracelets came off the stall at Margate in a cardboard box that smelled of vinegar, and Nadia sorted them on the pier rail while the gulls argued over a chip paper. Gold for her sister, silver for herself, the feathers always on the good sheet because they had to be pressed on slow. Nell would not sit still. She kept turning her wrist to the sun, saying the foil looked like it had been poured from a pan of molten coins, and Nadia told her to hold still or the leaf would crease.

They had a plan that summer, which was mostly to spend the money from the gift shop job on a train to somewhere with a harbour and no one who knew their mother. The bands went on in a row, thin ones first, then the dots scattered like spilt sequins across the back of the hand. Nell laid her arm over Nadia's and they stayed like that until the foil dried, both of them pretending the tide wasn't coming in around the posts below.
By September the silver had worn off the feathers at the edges and the gold had gone dull where the sea-salt got in. Nadia found the leftover sheet in a drawer, still in its sleeve, and pressed one feather onto her own wrist without asking anyone. It held. She left the rest in the box for Nell, and on the platform at Ramsgate she counted the bands on her arm, one for each day they had been brave enough to leave.
