Metallic geometric designs on ankle and foot

Geometric · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet in brown leather sandals show metallic silver and gold geometric designs, including a diamond and chevron pattern running up the ankle and a angular line motif on the top of each foot. The designs are flat, shimmering and outlined in fine lines rather than shaded, and they look like temporary metallic skin decals. The photo is taken from above with grey rolled jeans, layered silver coin anklets and a tiled floor in the background.

Take the lamp off the hook, Tomos, and bring the good cloth, for this is the part my grandmother never told without spitting in the fire. The seam under Carn Dhu ran silver for three miles, and every man in Penrhos knew its chevrons by heart, a zigzag of pale rock climbing the wall like a ladder some giant had dropped. Old Iorwerth could read that wall the way you read a letter from a sweetheart.

The trouble came when the Crown's assayer arrived with his brass scales and his clean collar. He weighed a sack of ore, shook his head at the diamonds between the bands, and wrote that the vein was thin. The men laughed until he produced a purse of coins stamped from the same lode, and then nobody laughed. Iorwerth took one, bit it, and went quiet. He knew what the Crown would do with the mountain once it learned its worth.

So on the night before the company men came up the valley with their wagons, Iorwerth took his hammer and his boy and climbed Carn Dhu. He did not cut the silver out. He chipped the diamonds from the wall one by one and dropped them into the stream that feeds the mill, where the water runs fast over grit. By dawn the seam looked like any other grey face of stone, and the assayer went home with empty scales.

They say the stream still glitters on the second Sunday of the month, when the light comes low across the valley. Children dip their hands in and come up with flakes on their knuckles, bright as the first day, and they laugh because they think they have found treasure. Iorwerth would have told them they had found something better: a mountain that decided, for once, who it belonged to. Now hush, the lamp is burning low, and it is past time you were in bed.
