Metallic geometric temporary tattoos on hand

Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo

The image shows a tanned hand and wrist with metallic silver and blue geometric designs, including stacked triangles and bands on the wrist and a feather and diamond motif on the back of the hand. The linework is crisp and solid, with no shading, and the designs appear to be temporary metallic transfers rather than permanent ink. The composition is a tight vertical crop of the hand, torso and thigh against a pale beach backdrop, with gold rings and chains as secondary detail.

Dear Ruth, the box came in on Tuesday with the porter's bag of left gloves and a broken umbrella, and I've been meaning to tell you about the sheet of transfers tucked in with them. Silver and a pale ice blue, printed on backing paper, the kind they sell in seaside shops for a shilling. Someone had cut out a few of the designs and left the rest, so the sheet looks like a map with the coastline nibbled away.

The stacked triangles are the ones I keep looking at. Three of them, nested like the iron trusses over platform two, each band picked out in tiny dots. There's a feather too, and a small diamond with lines running through it, the sort of pattern you'd see in the window of the rug shop on Harbour Street. I propped the sheet against the ticket office window where the light comes through the grime, and it threw blue shadows across the timetable for the rest of the afternoon.

On Thursday a woman came to claim the box. She wanted the umbrella and nothing else, and when I asked about the transfers she laughed and said she'd only been trying them on while she waited for the connection, to see whether they would survive the wind off the sea. She said they hadn't, not really, and that the feather was the first to go.

I've kept the sheet. The 4:10 is due in ten minutes, and when it pulls in I'll go out on the platform and look for anyone with a silver band on their wrist, though I know I won't find her. Write soon and tell me whether you still think I should have sent the gloves on to the depot.
