Metallic gold and silver ankle tattoos on a beach
Geometric · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two bare feet stand on pale sand with a sea and rocks in the background. The ankles carry metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos: a mandala-like paisley motif on one foot, a zigzag band and a vertical arrow of triangles on the other, all in fine outlined lines. The bright, sunlit composition is shot from a low angle with the focus on the feet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The jeweller's apprentice had been told three times that the foil would not hold on salt skin, and three times she had gone down to the shore anyway, because the old man's rule was that nothing worth keeping was ever made in a dry shop. Her tools lay in a canvas roll on the sand: a bone stylus, a pot of silver leaf, a pot of gold leaf beaten thinner than breath. She worked on the cold flat stone below the harbour wall while the tide came and went around her heels.

The paisley she drew first, a teardrop folded over itself until it became a seed head, then a wave, then a lamp. The lady of the salt house had asked for something that would look like it had grown there. Every curl was outlined twice so the light could catch the edge. When the silver went on, it hissed faintly against the warm skin and then settled, and the lady flexed her foot and laughed at how the metal moved with her tendons like the sea moving under a boat.
The arrow ran up the other ankle, a sequence of triangles pointing towards the knee, each one smaller than the last, as if the walk up the leg had been counted out in steps. The zigzag band she set just above it, a line of gold teeth to mark where the sandals ended. By evening the sun had gone low over the rocks and the metal burned like coins left in the sun. The old man came down with a lantern, looked at the work, and said nothing, which from him was praise. She rolled up her tools and left the sea to take what it would of the rest.
