Metallic triangle designs on an ankle

Geometric · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A bare foot and ankle rest on sand with the sea behind, and a second foot is visible at the right. Two stacked triangle designs made of gold and silver metallic panels sit on the ankle and the top of the foot, each split into smaller triangles in a geometric pattern. The warm, low sunlight gives the metallic panels a bright sheen, and the shallow focus keeps the feet sharp while the sea blurs into the background.

Maud had been cutting triangles from the wreck tin since the spring gales, and by the first week of August she had enough to mend the lantern room's broken prisms. The panels were thin as playing cards, gold leaf pressed onto brass on one side and a silver that had come off a Dutch coaster's hull on the other. Her father used to say a lamp is only as good as its worst corner. She kept her shears sharp and her temper sharper.

The trouble was the fit. Every triangle she held against the gallery rail came out a hair short, and the sea wind kept lifting them off the boards like moths. On the Thursday she carried the whole sheaf down to the strand and laid them flat on wet sand, where the low light would show her the true edges. The sun was copper and the tide had left a shine on everything.

A girl from the cottages came down the path with silver bells chiming at her ankles, the sound carrying up the cliff before she did. She crouched without asking, picked up the largest triangle and tilted it. Light jumped off the gold, slid across the silver and landed on Maud's face like a signal.

"Those are for the lamp?" the girl asked.

"They were," Maud said. She took the panel back and set it beside the others, where all four edges finally agreed. That night she fixed the lot into the gallery, and when the beam swept out over the water it came back to her in pieces, bright and exact, as if the sea had decided to keep a few of them.
