Metallic temporary tattoos on legs at the beach
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman sits on sand with her legs crossed, showing several metallic temporary tattoos on her skin. A large black and silver winged bird spreads across the upper arm, a black band with dots and gold linework sits on the forearm, and fine gold vines and a floral motif appear on the foot and ankle. The warm, low-angle daylight picks out the metallic sheen against the tanned skin, with jewellery and sand filling the background.

Don't lean on that wall, child, the lime is still wet from this morning's whitewash, and your grandmother will have my hide. Now. The bird. Everyone on Sarn knows the bird, but nobody tells it right. Listen.

Tomas Virr kept a brass compass and a falcon named Ysolde, and her wings were the colour of tarnished spoons, edged in black like a burnt page. When the mainland post stopped coming in the winter of the storms, Tomas was the one who rowed out to the Brannock light, because the keeper there had sent word by pigeon that the lamp oil was gone. Nobody else would go. The sea had been eating the causeway for a month.
He took the falcon in a wicker box with a bottle of sour cider and a coil of gold wire his mother used for mending nets. Halfway across, a wave came over the bow and the box split. Ysolde came out shaking, and she did not fly for the light. She went to the stern and sat on the rail and would not move until Tomas bent the wire along the gunwale in the shape of vines, the way his mother worked the church door at Sarn. Only then did she lift, and the wind turned, and the boat ran the last mile on the shadow of her wings.
They say the keeper's lamp burned that night. Some say the gold dots on the falcon's wing are the lamps she lit along the way. Others say it was only cider. My own view? Tomas came home with his hands raw from the wire and the bird on his shoulder, and that's the only proof a man on Sarn ever needs.
