Metallic temporary tattoo flash sheet
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A sheet of metallic gold and silver temporary tattoo designs on a white background. Motifs include a dreamcatcher, a swallow in flight, a feather, a leafy vine, a triskelion, an arrow, a crescent moon, infinity symbols, spirals, chevrons and rows of triangles. The designs are drawn with solid outlines and simple linework, with the foil finish giving a flat, reflective look.

Mercy Lund had sold foil transfers from the same card table on the Scarborough front for eleven summers, and she knew the sheets by their smell, warm glue and printer ink, the way a fishmonger knows his cod. The gold ones went first. Silver was for the older kids who wanted to look as if they had been somewhere.

On the Tuesday the wind came round to the north, a boy with a sunburnt neck asked for the sheet with the dreamcatcher on it, and then he asked whether the swallow came with it. It did not, she told him. The swallow was printed on the back, where the glue had gone patchy, and she had been keeping it for herself. Nobody had ever asked for the swallow before.
She peeled it off the backing for him, licked her thumb, pressed it to the inside of his wrist and counted to thirty the way her father had taught her to count the seconds between flashes on the lamp at Flamborough. The foil lifted clean. The bird stayed, a small bright shape with a forked tail, pointing out to sea.
"Where's it going?" the boy asked.
Mercy looked past the pier at the grey line of the horizon, where the first swallows of the year were always heading home from somewhere warmer. "Same place as the rest of us," she said, and handed him his change.
