Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A flat sheet of temporary tattoo designs on a white background, with block letters, arrows, chevrons, triangles, paw prints and a leopard print in gold and silver foil. A chain with a heart charm and a hexagon band run across the middle, and a black lace border sits along the bottom. The designs are simple outlines and solid shapes, arranged in an even grid with no body part shown.

The sheet had come rolled in brown paper with a note saying Do not fold, and by the second Saturday of August Dot Harrow had sold nine of its designs from a trestle table under the Bramley trees, most of them to children who wanted arrows. Her brother-in-law Terry thought the leopard spots were tacky and bought three sets for his granddaughters anyway. Wasps worked the windfalls at the end of the row. A boy with grass stains on his knees asked whether the block letters could spell his name, and Dot had to explain that they spelt nothing at all, so he settled for the triangle, which he said was a shark's fin.
Around four, an old man in a flat cap stopped at the table and asked for the chain with the heart charm. He had a tin of coins ready, counted out in exact change, and he did not explain himself. Dot offered to peel the transfer for him. He shook his head, took the sheet from her, and pressed the heart onto the inside of her wrist, smoothing it with his thumb until the paper backing came away clean.
'For the lorry driver who never once asked me for anything,' he said, and then he walked off towards the press house without looking back. Dot did not know what to say, so she said nothing. When she glanced down, the heart was sitting there, small and gold, catching the light off the leaves. She left it on through the last sales and the packing up, and only noticed she had forgotten it when she carried the tin to the gate and the sun was low over the perry pears.
