The water tanker had been losing wheel nuts since Coyote Wells, and Mara Ostrin counted them out loud each mile, the way her father had counted fence posts on the long run to Tennant. Forty-one. Forty-two. The road ran white and straight into the sky, and the only company she had was a line of crows riding the wind beside the cab, dropping away one by one as if they had somewhere better to be.

At Sayer's Cross, where the pumps had been painted the same blue as the sky for thirty years, an old man sat beside a tin bucket of dreamcatchers. Each hoop was willow wrapped in sinew, with a feather hanging from the bottom. The old people say the net catches the bad dreams and lets the good ones slide through, he told her, and the moon does the sorting. He would take no money for it. Only the truth about why she was driving. She told him about the wheel nuts, and he laughed and hung the thing on her mirror anyway.
Past dark the moon came up thin as a paring knife, and the net turned slowly on its cord, throwing small silver stars across the dashboard. Near Lark Flat a boy stood at the verge with one hand raised and no bag at all. She stopped. He asked how far the coast was, and when she said it was three days, he said his mother was there, waiting. He sat with the water jug between his knees and did not speak again until the lights of the next town showed like coins at the bottom of a well.
In the morning the cab was empty, though she had not heard the door. On the seat lay a single gold feather, fine as a hair, come loose from the net. She pinned it inside the sun visor and drove on, and for the first time since Coyote Wells she lost count of the wheel nuts on purpose.
