Metallic wave and scallop shell on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm and wrist with a silver wave outline, a thin gold band and a gold scallop shell with radiating lines, all appearing to be metallic temporary tattoos. The wrist is clenched at the top of the frame, and teal cord bracelets sit on the wrist beside the designs. The background shows a window and greenery, with soft natural light and a shallow focus.

Dear Nell, The Jubilee lock has frozen again, so we are tied up below the mill with nothing to do but count the swans. Your package came Tuesday. I have worn the shell every day since, though Dad says a grown woman should not go about with gold on her arm like a fishmonger's wife. I told him fishmongers' wives have the best taste in jewellery.

You will laugh at the wave. I found it in the chandler's tin at Gainsborough, the one with the sea glass and the bent cufflinks. It is a silver squiggle that catches the light when I wash up, so I keep rubbing it on my trousers. The gold band came from the same tin. Put them all together and I look like I have been to a coast I have never seen.
Here is the thing I meant to tell you. Last week a man off the Humber tug asked where I got the scallop, and when I said the market, he said the old pilgrims sewed these on their hats so people would know they had walked all the way to Santiago and back. Fourteen hundred miles, he reckoned, on foot, for a shell. I said that sounded daft. He said most good things are.
I have been thinking about that since. The barge only goes as far as the sea lock and back, and I have never once wanted to go further. Still, I have started keeping a list of the places I would walk to if someone gave me a shell for it. Write soon, and tell Mum the teal cord is still on my wrist from the Christmas box. It has not come off once. Love, Bea
