Small gold bee on the wrist
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A small outlined bee, with an oval body, striped abdomen and two looped wings, sits on the inner wrist near the base of the hand. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is rendered in a metallic gold ink that appears to be a temporary transfer. The close crop places the tattoo at the centre of the frame, with warm, out-of-focus wood tones behind the arm.

The snow has shut the pass since Tuesday, and Mrs Haddow has sent you up to the loft with the lantern because the hives are the only thing in the house she trusts you not to drop. Most of the colony is clustered and sleeping, a dark furred knot in the comb. You crack the ice on the water tray and count what is still alive. One bee has woken properly. It bumps the skylight in slow, stubborn circles, as though the valley below still owes it a debt.

On the third night a carter called Tobias Wren comes up from the road with his mule steaming and a lamp swinging from the cart. He carries a small tin box stamped with a gilt hive and sets it on the bar without opening it. Mrs Haddow says the only gold in this house is the candle wax, and Tobias laughs, though he keeps one hand flat on the lid. You watch the firelight slide across the tin and think of the bee in the loft, the way it never quite stops moving even when everything else has given up.
Later, when the fire has burned down to a red eye, you climb the ladder again. The skylight is furred with frost, but the bee is on the sill and has not gone back to sleep. You work the latch loose with your thumbnail. The cold rushes in, and the bee lifts, not toward the lamp or the warm dark of the comb, but straight out into the white, toward the far black line of the pass where the road must be.
In the morning the snowplough's bell rings in the lane. Mrs Haddow finds a smear of gold dust on the ledger, right beside the guest count, and she does not ask where it came from. You do not tell her. Outside, the sky is clear for the first time in a week, and the road runs bright and empty all the way to the valley.
