Fresh black script reading Miami, drawn as a heartbeat line across the upper back and covered with clear plastic wrap.

Miami script in a heartbeat line on the back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a fresh tattoo across the upper back, with a hand resting on the skin at the left. The word Miami is repeated in thin, pointed black script that rises and falls like an ECG trace, with the strokes peaking sharply between letters. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the clear wrap over the piece gives the photo a glossy, warm light.

He'd lie on the settee with the wire aerial across the carpet and say the word Miami as if it were a place he'd been promised. He never went. When the doctor put a machine on his chest, the little green line jumped up and down on the screen, and he watched it the whole time, and every time it peaked he said, 'There, that's me, that's Miami.'

When the nurse printed the strip for me, I folded it into my purse, and it's still there. Those spikes, sharp as a dropped pin, are the nights he kept time with a station he never visited. Go on, ring the bell for the lift. It'll not come, but ring it anyway, and say his name the way he said the other one.
