Fine line sound wave tattoo on the side of the body

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo shows a symmetrical audio waveform, with jagged peaks above and below a central line that tapers to a point at each end. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The photograph is black and white and is framed close on the body, with the tattoo across the middle of the image.

Keep your voice low, lad, or Thornwick will hand it back to you before you've finished the word. Sit where the wall still holds the sun. The nettles have the kitchen now, and the roof went the winter my mother was born, but the hall remembers everything said in it. That's the whole trouble with it.

There was a lord's daughter, Elspeth Kersey, who stood at the top of the stair the year the Scots came over the moor. When the men below had barred the gate, she'd clap once, hard, so they knew the bolt was home. The hall took that one clap and flung it back off every arch, round and round the courtyard, each answer a little weaker than the last, like a dog that won't let go of the bone. Shepherds swore they could hear it at the river.

Your great-grandad came up here in nineteen seventy-one with a reel machine and a surveyor's notebook. He stood where she stood and clapped, and the machine drew the sound for him as a line, peak by peak, with the long tail of it going out over the grass. He copied that line in ink onto a sheet and kept it folded in his coat for the rest of his days. He said it looked like a moth's wing folded wrong, and he was pleased with that.

Nobody has ever found the bottom of that echo. Last time I stood there I clapped and counted, and I got to forty before I gave up. Then the hall gave one more, very soft, just the shape of the first sound, and went quiet. That's the thing I want you to remember. The sound doesn't stop. It only gets too small for us to catch.
