Semicolon and heartbeat line on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms an ECG-style heartbeat trace, with a solid semicolon sitting in the centre of the line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The forearm fills the frame horizontally, with a blurred indoor background of framed pictures on a wall.

You are sixteen and sweeping sawdust off the Waltzer's boards in a field outside Boston when Mr Abernethy calls you into the caravan that smells of paraffin and cold tea. On the table lies a strip of graph paper, scored with a spiky line, rescued from a hospital skip behind the bus depot. He holds it up to the bulb like a pools coupon.

"Chart recorder," he says. "Pen goes up when the heart goes up. Flat means the thing's finished." He runs a thumb along the peaks, counting under his breath as if calling bingo numbers. Then he takes a stub of carpenter's pencil and, in the gap between two beats, presses down until the lead bites through and leaves a fat dot with a comma's tail. A semicolon, sitting right in the middle of the trace.
"Nobody writes that where they can see it," he says. "Full stop's for the undertaker. Comma's for the bit where you take a breath. That one says pause, I'm not done, the line carries on." You want to ask whose heart it was, but he has already folded the chart into your jacket pocket and gone back to the generator, shouting over his shoulder that the Ghost Train won't light itself.
The fair leaves at dawn, the way it always does, the rides folding into lorries like sleeping animals. Years later, a grown man in a city with no fields, you find the folded paper in a coat you have not worn since. The pencil dot has smudged to a grey eye. You trace the line with your finger, all those little climbs, and you keep going.
