Mickey dreamcatcher with castle and charms

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A Mickey Mouse head outline in bold black ink frames a dark castle silhouette with small coloured fireworks bursts, and a hoop beneath it hangs feathers, a wizard hat, a genie lamp, a fork, a Minnie-style polka dot bow, a red apple, a rose and pink petals. The outlines are solid and bold, while the charms and feathers use soft shading and bright colour. The design is centred on the leg, with the hanging charms spreading downward against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Halloran had been sleeping in the van since the summer fair folded on the front at Saltcombe, and the bay still smelled of cordite and chip fat when he climbed the iron stairs to the old castle wall each evening. The council wanted a finale over the water for the lifeboat appeal, and he had a box of blue stars, a box of red peonies and one stubborn crate of rockets that had come up from Plymouth with its labels soaked through.

Mags, who ran the candyfloss stall, had given him a hoop the week before. It was a wire ring strung with odds and ends from the fair's lost property: a tin moon-hat from the rifle gallery, a brass lamp with a dented spout, a fork bent into the shape of a question mark, a painted wooden apple, a rose going brown at the edges, and a polka-dot bow that had belonged to a child who never came back for it. Halloran hung it from the van mirror and told her it was superstition. She told him that was the same thing.

The rockets went up at nine. The first three fizzed and drowned in the mist, and he stood on the wall swearing at them while the crowd below drifted towards the chippy. Then the fourth caught clean. Peonies bloomed gold over the water, and for a moment the whole castle was lit like a stage, every battlement sharp, and he saw it doubled in the wet stone of the harbour wall.

Later, back at the van, the hoop swung against the windscreen as he turned the key. One petal had come loose from the rose and lay on the passenger seat, pink as a fingernail. He pocketed it. Some things you keep without knowing why, and some you hang up and let do the watching.
