Mickey Mouse with puzzle pieces on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Mickey Mouse head fills the centre of the image, with its ears and face filled with a pattern of interlocking multicoloured puzzle pieces. A single loose puzzle piece sits to the right of the head. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, yellow, green and blue give it a clean, graphic look against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been on the market since noon, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would lift. Old Hanne sold mended things under a green tarpaulin: clocks, kettles, a cracked violin. The mouse came to her table on the third wet day, sitting up on his hind legs with his round ears full of water, and asked if she had anything that had lost a part.

She said everything had lost a part. He said he had lost one himself, a piece of his face, and he did not know where it had gone. Hanne looked at him for a long while. Then she reached under the table and brought out a box of odd pieces, all the colours of a child's paint set, red and yellow and green and blue, and tipped them onto the wet wood.

They fitted him. Not all at once. The mouse sorted through the box with his small pink paws, turning each piece until its edges matched something, until his ears were a patchwork of colour and his cheeks were smooth again. The last piece he found was a blue one, and it would not go in. He held it up to Hanne.

"Keep that one," she said. "It belongs to somebody who is still looking for their own." He tucked it under his arm, bowed, and walked off into the rain, which had at last begun to thin. Behind him the tarpaulin dripped, and the market folk said afterwards that the pieces on his ears shone for a long time after the sky had cleared.
