Mickey Mouse key tattoo on the calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A key with its bow shaped like Mickey Mouse's head, filled with a dark silhouette of a seated figure against a rose-brown background. A red polka dot ribbon is tied around the shaft, and a dark castle silhouette sits at the base of the key. Bold black outlines and simple shading give the key a solid, graphic look, set against smooth skin with a plain blue background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The key came across my counter wrapped in a bus timetable, its brass gone the colour of weak tea. A boy of about nine set it down between us as if it might bite. "It doesn't open anything," he said. "That's why I need a copy. So it can open something." I told him keys don't work that way, but he had already decided, and after thirty years behind this counter I know when a customer has decided.

I clamped the original in the vice to take a pattern. The bow was two round ears on a little head, and inside the head someone had sealed a silhouette under the glass: a figure sitting with knees drawn up, looking out at nothing. Below the shaft, a stone castle with spires had been cut into the bit, every turret sharp enough to snag a sleeve. Nothing about it was made to fit a lock in this town. I filed the copy by hand, slowly, because the boy was watching and because I wanted to see whether the teeth would line up.

He came back the following Thursday. He didn't want the copy. He wanted to know if the original still worked, so I tried it in the back door of my own shop, the one I had padlocked in 1987 and never opened since. It turned. Behind the door was a cupboard of unlabelled tins, and on the top shelf a box of spare keys, each tied with a red ribbon, each with a different bow.

The boy took his original back and left the copy on the counter, where it still sits. I have kept the ribbon on the shelf beside it, and I have not yet found the door it belongs to.
