Mickey Mouse outline with scrollwork and rose

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

A bold black outline of a Mickey Mouse head contains intricate black scrollwork and small floral motifs. A red rose with green stem and leaves sits near the centre. The black outline is solid and heavy, while the interior linework is thin, and the only colour is the red and green of the rose.

Dear Maggie, we are back in Grimsby with the hold half full of cod and Dougie still sulking about the weather. You will want to hear about the hatch cover. Before we sailed, Stan Pryce took a tin of black enamel and a brush no thicker than a hair and spent two evenings drawing curls on the wood, in a big round shape with two smaller rounds on top, like a head with ears. He said it was for luck and that nobody on the Marigold would sink under a thing so daft. The lads laughed, then stopped when they saw he had put a red rose in the middle, painted with the only red tin he could find, its green stems running down toward the coaming.

Off the Dogger we took a sea over the bow that snapped the fore davit and filled the fish room to the knees. Two nights we rode it with the pumps going and nobody talking much. On the second night I went up in the dark to check the hatch, and the torch beam caught that red flower. It looked wet and bright, as if it had been picked that morning. I stood there longer than I should have, with the water coming over my boots, thinking about you putting my tea in the blue cup.

We came in on the morning tide. The owners have decided the Marigold needs a fresh coat of grey before the surveyor sees her, so the foreman has been at the hull with a roller since dawn. Stan asked him to leave the hatch alone. The foreman said it was a daft mouse with a flower on it and he would have it scrubbed off by Friday. Stan just shrugged and said the rose would outlast the paint.

I went down this morning to see, and the primer has gone over everything except that flower, which the rain has rinsed to a clean pink. Nobody has the heart to touch it now. Save me a seat on Sunday. Love, Tom.
