Microphone tattoo on a thumb

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small microphone tattoo on the side of a raised thumb, with the lower face and lips of a woman visible behind the hand. The microphone is drawn in fine black lines with soft grey shading on the body and stand. The background is out of focus, keeping attention on the small design against the skin.

Dear Tom,

The rain has finally stopped over Hollin Wood, so I went back up with the old ribbon microphone Dad left me and sat on the stump by the stile until the jackdaws lost interest in me. You will laugh, but I have started talking to the trees before I press record. Mrs Penrose at the shop thinks I have gone soft in the head, and perhaps I have, but the wood seems to like being asked politely.

Yesterday I heard something I could not place. It was low and slow, like a wet thumb running round the rim of a glass, and it came from the hollow beyond the beeches where nothing grows because the stream changed course in Grandmother's time. I held the microphone out over the bracken for almost an hour. My fingers went numb and the cable kept snagging on brambles, but I did not want to move in case I frightened it off.

When I played the take back in the kitchen, the sound was there, faint under the kettle and the clock. Then, right at the end, a second voice came in beneath it, saying my name the way Mum used to call me in from the orchard. I have listened to it nine times now. I know exactly what the microphone heard, which is nothing, and I know exactly what I heard, which is Mum saying, Ada, come in now.

I am going back tomorrow with a fresh tape and a longer afternoon. I have left the stand standing in the hollow with the cable coiled on top of it, so if anyone finds it they will know I was there.

Your loving sister, Ada
