Miles to go script on top of foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot wearing a brown sandal, with the words miles to go written in a flowing cursive script across the top of the foot. The linework is thin and even, in dark navy or black ink, with the letters sloping gently from left to right. The warm wooden floor and purple nail polish sit in the background and foreground, and the tattoo is the clear focus of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The leather came off the last of the Hadleys' sandals on Tuesday, and I thought of you, because you always said a strap should be cut from the shoulder of the hide where it stretches least. Mum's kettle has gone again. I have told Mr Pryce it is the element, but he insists it is the limescale and will not hear otherwise.
Your letter came with the Lisbon stamp. You wrote that the road out of Porto runs for days without a bend, and that you count the milestones like beads on a rosary. Miles to go, you said, the poem Dad used to read on the front step with his boots off. I laughed at that, sitting on the stool with the awl in my hand, because you never walked further than the bus to Penzance until this year.
I keep thinking about your boots. The left one split at the instep the morning you left, and I stitched it with thread pulled from my good blue skirt because there was nothing else in the drawer. If it has held, it has been carrying you for weeks now. If it has rubbed you raw, say so, and I will send the good wax and a new pair of laces by return.
The shop bell rang this afternoon and a girl came in with a box of old shoes, asking whether anything could be saved. I told her most things can, if you are patient with the stitching. She laughed and said the same about her grandfather. I have set the awl down and put the kettle on, though it will probably boil dry. Send me a photograph of the road, not the postcard kind. Come home when you have covered the miles, and I will have the boots waiting on the step.
Your sister, Nell
