Namaste script on the side of a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is shown in profile, with a single line of thin black cursive script reading namaste running along the outer side above the heel. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the photo is black and white. The grey, mottled floor in the background keeps the focus on the small lettering.

You are on your knees at the edge of the Pavilion's sprung floor, scraping a week of spilt lager and glitter out of the seams with a butter knife, when Vera Holt comes in through the side door with her Tuesday class already behind her, trailing the smell of wet coats. She watches you for a while before she says the word. Namaste, she says, and bends her head to you the way the old men do at the bus stop. You tell her you're not a yoga person. She says nobody is, to start with.

The hall keeps its own time. Between the tea urn and the piano nobody has tuned since 1987, the lights in the rafters hum at a pitch you can feel in your back teeth. Vera takes a stick of white chalk from her cardigan pocket and draws a long, unhurried line along the boards, looping it into letters that lean forward as if they have somewhere to be. The word is the one she said. She tells you it means the spark in me sees the spark in you, and that her mother used to say it when she wasn't allowed to say anything else.
Friday brings the wedding party, then the Saturday ceilidh, then the rain that pools under the fire door. The chalk wears down under heels and brogues and a dropped bottle of sherry. You mean to wipe it off with the mop, and you do, most nights, but on the far side of the floor, where the bar lights throw their long yellow reach, a thin curve of the word survives, scuffed but legible, and every dancer who crosses it steps around it without knowing why.
