Millennium Falcon on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed tattoo of the Millennium Falcon spaceship sits on the inner forearm, drawn in fine black outlines with panel lines, cockpit and engine detail. The ship is shown in black ink only, with the skin tone showing through between lines. The arm is held up against a dark galaxy-patterned fabric printed with the Star Wars logo, which fills the background.

You are fourteen and the fair has come back to the edge of the mere, the generators grumbling under the dodgems like something asleep. Your cousin Tomasz swears the Ghost Train has a real ghost in its third carriage. You don't believe him, but you have three pound coins warm in your fist and nowhere else to be.

At the end of the row, between the candyfloss van and a tent that smells of diesel and sugar, a man called Ruben Shaw sells paper ships from a card table under a bare bulb. He folds them himself, he says, from instructions in a book his late father left him. Every one is the same ship, slightly lopsided, with a cockpit hatch drawn in biro and two engines at the back like hot coins. You ask what it's for. He turns it over in his fingers. "Getting you past the bit where you stop being scared of the dark," he says. "She's a bucket, but she's never once left a passenger behind."
You buy one for a pound and carry it to the wheel, where Tomasz is being sick behind the hook-a-duck stall. The lights tilt and spin and the whole field smears into a single bright bruise. When you look down, the paper ship is unfolding in your palm, creases flattening, its lines running fine and dark as if someone is tracing them with a pen that never runs out.
The fair packs up at dawn. Tomasz goes home with a plastic sword and a story nobody believes. You walk the field alone, past the spot where the card table stood. There's no table and no bulb, just a ring of flattened grass and one tent peg bent almost into a hook. In your coat pocket, folded small and neat, is a ship with a hatch and two engines, and when you hold it up to the grey light, it is pointing east.
