Fine line black script tattoo reading mia with a small looped heart on the side of the ribs, shown in a black and white photo.

Script name and heart on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the word mia in a thin, flowing script with a small heart drawn as a continuous loop off the final letter. The linework is even and dark, with no shading, and the ink reads as solid black against the skin. A hand with a ring and a knitted garment are visible at the top of the frame, and the photo is in black and white.

You find the note on the lift mirror on the fourteenth floor, written in biro on the back of a council repairs leaflet. The lift has been out since Tuesday, so you take the stairs, and by the ninth landing your calves have opinions about it. The handwriting is careful and round, the kind that gets practised on envelopes when nobody is watching.

It says that the dog in flat 3 howls at the bin lorry every Thursday, that the man in 12 plays the same three chords at two in the morning, and that whoever keeps leaving the bread bin open should please stop. At the bottom is a name, Mia, and beside it a small heart drawn in one unbroken line, the loop running off the end of the word as though the pen was never meant to lift.

On the way down you knock on doors and ask after her. Nobody knows a Mia. On the ground floor the caretaker, Mr Okafor, leans on his broom and says the flat on nine was let to a girl of that name until the spring, and that she left a box of library books by the bin store marked for whoever wanted them. You still have the box. Half the spines are cracked where someone read them in the bath.

You climb back up with the note folded in your pocket. At the fourteenth floor you take out a pen, write beneath her name that the lift is mended now and the bread bin is shut, and draw a heart of your own, looping off your initial. Then you tape it to the mirror, where the next person climbing will have to read it before they can see their own face.
