Meow script tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a fine script tattoo spelling the word Meow on the side of a torso, below a black lace bra. The letters have smooth, tapered strokes with a looping capital M and soft shading in the thicker parts of the linework. The image is a close, slightly angled crop with a white door and handle visible at the right edge.

Three hundred winters after the last tabby died in Portsmouth, the Quiet Archive kept a single word nobody could say aloud. It was written in a looping hand on a card no bigger than a palm, and the clerks called it the Sound Without a Source. Mara Quennell, who was twelve and had no patience for riddles, asked her grandmother what it meant. Her grandmother said, "Ask the door."
So Mara went to the old pantry door at the back of the archive, the one painted white and chipped at the handle, and she pressed her ear to the wood. Nothing. She tried again at dusk, when the lamps came on, and this time the door creaked, and out of the seam slid a sound so small and so certain that she laughed out loud and then cried.
The clerks argued for a month. The council sent men with ledgers and measuring tapes. But Mara knew what she had heard, and she copied it onto a fresh card the only way the old one had taught her, with the M curled like a tail and the last letters trailing off into the dark. Your tea's going cold, and I've talked too long.
