Sit closer, you lot, and mind the wasps in the windfalls. He sat at the end of the third row, straight as a poker, his tail wrapped round his feet like a bit of smoke that had decided to stay. The children said he was waiting for someone. My grandfather said he was counting the trees. He wasn't counting anything. He was listening to the ground, the way cats do, for the small sounds moving under the grass.
One evening the storm came over Malvern early, and the wind took the top ladder off the wall and laid it flat across the cart track. Tom Gale was up on the far side with a sack of Bramleys, and the rungs had gone. Sixpence did not run. He went up the broken ladder one rung at a time, ears flat to his skull, then stood on the highest bough and shook the leaves until the boy could find the trunk again and feel his way down.
In the morning the saucer was empty and the bark on the far side of the wall was scored with three long curling marks, as if someone had drawn a cat with a burnt stick and then thought better of it. Sixpence came for his milk the next night as though nothing had happened, and every Bramley on that row came in sound.
