Sitting cat line drawing with curled tail
Black and grey · Flash
A single cat sits in profile, head raised and looking upward, with a long S-shaped back and a tail that wraps round to the front. The outline is drawn in bold black strokes that taper at their ends, with small whisker marks on the face and no shading or fill. The subject is centred on a plain white background with generous margins.

From up there I could see everything: the floor polished to a gloss, the couples turning, and the bandleader's shoes tapping out a time he never quite kept.

Dolores came every week in the same green dress, and every week Walter stood on her hem before the first waltz ended. She never complained. She only glanced up, the way I did, as if the answer to something might be hanging somewhere above the crowd. One night she paused beside the piano, close enough that I could smell the lavender on her wrists, and said she would dance the last number with whoever was still standing.
The lanterns died at a quarter to eleven when a fuse blew in the cloakroom. Nobody screamed. The band kept playing by the light of two candles, and the floor emptied into shadow until only one green dress moved across the boards, slow and certain. Walter stood by the door with his hands in his pockets.
She turned in a circle beneath the piano and looked up at me. I stretched my neck the way I always had, until the last chord finished and the hall was dark and warm and she was laughing. I stayed where I was. Cats know when to keep their places.
