Small fine line skull on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline skull in side profile sits on the inner wrist, drawn in thin, single black linework with no shading. The hand is raised against a plain pale background, and the bright red nail polish is the only strong colour in the frame. The tattoo is placed centrally on the wrist and occupies a small part of the image.

The snow shut the moor road on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the Crown at Harrowgate Cross had seven guests, one cask of bitter and a fire that wanted feeding every hour. You take the ledger down from its hook because nobody else will touch it. The margins are crowded with names you half remember and a few you don't, and someone has been doodling small stars beside the paid ones.

The guest in room four came in with the blizzard, a surveyor from Carlisle who paid in coins and kept his gloves on at supper. On the second night you find his sketchbook left open on the settle. Between pencilled plans of a culvert and a column of figures sits a skull in side profile, drawn in one unbroken line with no shadow, the jaw hung open as if it has just remembered something. Underneath he has written: found in the gully, returned to the gully.
By morning the plough has cut a path to the village and room four is empty, the bed made tight, the bill settled in full. Tucked under the saucer is a folded note in the same narrow hand. It says only: do not let the book go back on the shelf. You read it twice, then turn to the ledger and find his name, dated thirty years ago, written in your grandmother's writing.
You smooth the sketch flat, slide it between the pages where that name sits, and listen to the snow settle against the glass.
